The resultant palace, completed in 1756, is nearly 1km in circumference, with elaborately decorated blue-and-white facades featuring gilded atlantes, caryatids and pilasters designed by German sculptor Johann Franz Dunker, who also worked with Rastrelli on the palace's original interiors. In Elizabeth's reign it took over 100kg of gold to decorate the palace exteriors, an excess that was deplored by Catherine the Great when she discovered the state and private funds that had been lavished on the building. The interiors of the Catherine Palace are no less spectacular.

Our guide did an amazing tour of St Petersburg! My husband loves history and can often by critical of some guides. He was impressed with her knowledge and ability to communicate clearly in English; her accent was easy to follow and her descriptions of iconic places and personal insight was incredible! I am a travel agent and will recommend taking a private your to my clients who travel Russia in a heart beat! I am confident they will return completely satisfied. I do not recommend cruise line tours as they are usually crowded with anywhere between 15-30 guests on a coach. We had a marvelous visit to a beautiful city full of history and sights and sounds! Alina is amazing. I know we plan to return ASAP to a wonderful and beautiful city! We even added the Faberge Museum (extra cost) but well worth it. We were taken to some really nice Russian restaurants which was our request (own account). Everything about the private tour was over and above what we espected.
